Previously available on a small handful of releases with the Sabotage ‘Stripped
Down’ release perhaps being the most obvious and readily available. This
release however has been sourced from a completely different recording than any
other (uncirculating until now) and clocks in at 5 minutes longer than the
Sabotage audio release, due in part to the fact the ‘DAT Intro’ has been left
intact on here (Sabotage’s release strangely doesn’t include the opener). The
only downside to the new source recording appears to be that it was incomplete
as ‘Partyman’ sounds like it has been taken from a completely different
recording – perhaps the change is only really audible at any great volume,
however I picked up on it. That aside, the rest of the new recording is of
stunning quality and contains far more vibrancy, life and clarity than the
Sabotage release. Add to that the extra running length of the show and you have
perhaps the best release of this broadcasted concert. The show itself is a very
basic Nude tour concert from the mid-section of the tour however the performance
is far from mundane and both the versions of ‘Purple Rain’ and ‘The Question Of
U’ are as good as any from the entire tour.
Newly sourced recordings are always worth comparing to the previous versions,
and it’s a pleasure when you find something of improved quality – no matter how
good the previous release was. This is a more complete release in improved
quality – what’s not to like?
