Previously circulating on the fan release 'London 29/07/88', this
release is far more complete and runs around 12 minutes longer. The previous
release had various minor drop-outs throughout, however a large chunk of 'Bob
George' and an even larger chunk of 'The Cross' were missing - thankfully not a
problem here as they remain in their entirety, all meaning the show runs at
almost 140 minutes, and is one of the longest of either the European, US or
Japanese legs of the tour. That's a positive however the negative of this
release is the quality of the recording. It's certainly an improvement over the
previous fan release (although it is the same source - not a new recording), but
I'm still struggling to grade this as anything higher than VG- as it's very
shrill, with some distortion on the high-end throughout, and a very audible
audience for the majority of the show, especially the first half of the concert.
Much better than before, but I really can't say this is average (which would be
a VG rating) as the audio problems really affect one's listening pleasure. The
audio issues aside - if you can put them aside - don't be put off, as this is
really a rather special concert. The performance is very loose for a Lovesexy
show with Prince slightly changing the show to accommodate a lengthy jam into
'Head' with Eric Leeds having far more show time than perhaps is normal. Add to
this an appearance by Mavis Staples for 'I'll Take You There' (as with the 26th
July show), and a double-speed, very frantic, unique performance of 'The Cross',
and you have a pretty memorable show. The piano medley is rather short at 6
minutes, however it does feature the rather rare inclusion of 'Do Me, Baby' for
the European leg. Fans of the Lovesexy era will presumably enjoy this as the
show is more complete than the previous version, however the sound quality may
be a little too problematic for everyone else.
